Before using Ubuntu, make sure you read the documentation on how to format and install a Windows-formatted partition. Despite these limitations, Ubuntu can perform file access on a Windows formatted partition, which is a powerful system. The bootloader on a Windows system may not be able to boot from the partition if it is not properly formatted. The first thing you should do is boot your Ubuntu system from a Windows partition, as all files and folders on the Windows partition will be deleted. There are, however, a few conditions attached to this approach. This can be done by mounting the drive in Linux and then accessing the files on the drive. In general, however, it is possible to read a Windows hard drive with Linux. There is no simple answer to this question as it depends on a number of factors.
